Applesauce Spice Bars image

Went to an auction and found this old tin recipe box with hand written recipes and some clipped from various places. This one sounded pretty good.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 c applesauce
2/3 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 c vegetable oil
2 eggs
2 c bisquick baking mix
1/4 c butter
2 c powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 or 2 Tbsp hot water
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 c chopped nutes

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 350. Grease oblong pan, 13x9x2
  • 2. Beat applesauce, brownsugar, oil, and eggs in large bowl at medium speed. For about 1 minute.
  • 3. Stir in baking mix, pumpkin pie spice, and nuts. Pour into prepared pan evenly.
  • 4. Bake for 25 minutes or until toothpick is clean when inserted. Cool
  • 5. Prepare Browned Butter Glaze: Heat butter over low heat until golden brown; remove from heat. Beat in powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir in water, 1 teaspoon at a time, until smoothe and of desired consistency.
  • 6. Spread on cooled cake. Cut into bars, about 3x1 inch.

These bars were a bit too sweet for my taste, but they were still good. I think I'll try reducing the amount of sugar next time.
