KITTENCAL'S LAYERED BAKED CANDIED YAMS

Kittencal's Layered Baked Candied Yams image

This is a very simple recipe for candied yams but big on flavor, it's a must served along side of a Thanksgiving turkey or ham dinner ---the yams must be prebaked in oven *only* not boiled and just until fork tender do not bake until very soft and this may be done up to a day ahead --- this may be doubled and baked in a 13 x 9-inch baking pan, prep time does not include prebaking the yams --- no pumpkin pie spice? just mix together 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon with 1/4 teaspoon *each* nutmeg and allspice and use in place of the pumpkin pie spice :)

Tips:

  • Choose the right yams: Look for firm, smooth yams with no blemishes or bruises. The best yams for baking are Garnet yams, which have a deep orange color and a slightly sweet flavor.
  • Wash and peel the yams thoroughly: To remove any dirt or debris, use a vegetable brush to scrub the yams under running water. Then, use a sharp knife to peel the yams, being careful not to remove too much of the flesh.
  • Cut the yams into even-sized pieces: This will help them cook evenly. Aim for pieces that are about 1-inch thick.
  • Soak the yams in cold water for 30 minutes: This will help to remove some of the starch from the yams, which will make them less likely to stick together during baking.
  • Toss the yams with melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger: This will help to coat the yams and give them a delicious flavor.
  • Bake the yams in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 45-60 minutes, or until they are tender: Use a fork to check the tenderness of the yams. They are done when they are easily pierced.
  • Serve the yams hot with your favorite soul food dishes: Candied yams are a classic side dish for fried chicken, turkey, ham, and other soul food favorites.

Conclusion:

Baked candied yams are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for any occasion. They are also a great way to use up leftover yams. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a dish that is sure to please everyone at your table.
