HAM AND POTATOES AU GRATIN
This is one of the dishes Grandma served to our family during the holidays. Now, when the family gathers and I prepare this for my grandchildren, memories of those special times at Grandma's house fill my mind. I usually double this recipe, because the leftovers are fabulous when warmed in the microwave.

Steps:
- Turn the oven up to 180-200ÃÂÃÂÃÂðC
- Boil up the macaroni until almost cooked
- In the meantime, make the sauce. Melt the butter in a pan along with the garlic, and then pour in the milk. Once this is bubbling and the macaroni is starting to soften in the other pot, have in the flour. Remember to stir the sauce constantly! Mix in the flour and stir until it thickens, add the salt and pepper and pour in the ham, combine.
- In a larger bowl, pour in the sauce and ham, drain the macaroni once it's cooked and mix it in with the sauce. Transfer the mix to a large ovenproof dish, and top with grated cheese. Bake for about 40 minutes until the cheese is golden. If the gratin is still looking a bit pale close to the finishing time, turn the grill on high, checking on it every second minute or so, so it doesn't end up burnt.
- Take it out to cool for a few minutes, before helping yourself to a good portion!
Tips:
- To save time, use pre-cooked ham and broccoli florets.
- For a creamier gratin, use heavy cream instead of milk.
- Add a cup of grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor.
- To make the gratin ahead of time, assemble it and bake it for 30 minutes. Then, let it cool completely and refrigerate it for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, reheat it in a 350°F oven until heated through.
- Serve the gratin with a side salad or roasted vegetables.
Conclusion:
Broccoli and ham gratin is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal or a special occasion. It is also a great way to use up leftover ham. With its creamy sauce, tender broccoli, and crispy breadcrumb topping, this gratin is sure to be a hit with everyone at the table.
