This is an excellent side dish to accompany ham, turkey, etc. I always have requests for this dish during the holidays! This can be made ahead, refrigerated, and cooked when needed.

3 heads broccoli, cut into florets
4 onions, quartered
¼ cup butter
¼ cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
8 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese
¼ cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Place a steamer basket in a pot over boiling water, and steam the broccoli about 5 minutes, until tender. Place the onions in a separate pot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until tender. Arrange the broccoli and onions in the prepared dish.
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, and stir in the flour until smooth. Blend in the milk until thickened. Blend in the cream cheese until melted. Pour the mixture over the broccoli and onions. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese, and top with bread crumbs.
  • Bake covered in the preheated oven 30 minutes. Remove cover, and continue baking 30 minutes, until lightly browned.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb broccoli
2 cups onions
2 tablespoons margarine
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese (cut up)
1/2 cup cheddar cheese (shredded)
2 tablespoons margarine
1 cup dry breadcrumbs

Steps:

  • Cook broccoli and onions until tender. Drain and set aside.
  • In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons margarine, stir in flour, salt, and a dash of pepper.
  • Add milk; cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
  • Add cream cheese; cook and stir 1-2 minutes then stir in broccoli and onions.
  • Put in 1-1/2 quart casserole dish. Top with cheddar cheese.
  • Melt remaining 2 tablespoons margarine and toss with bread crumbs. Sprinkle over casserole.
  • Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes.

1 pound fresh broccoli
2 cups fresh onions or leeks, chopped
1 cup sharp or medium cheddar cheese
4 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp salt, dash of pepper
1 cup milk
4 oz cream cheese
2 tbsp butter
1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
2tbsp parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • 1. Cut broccoli into bite size pieces and cook in boiling water for about 3 minutes, drain Blanch onions,drain.
  • 2. Sauce... melt butter over medium heat, add flour, salt,pepper and milk and whisk until smooth. Blend in cream cheese until melted and smooth.
  • 3. Place broccoli into a 2 quart casserole dish. Place blanched onions on top of broccoli layer. Pour sauce over vegetables, spreading evenly. Sprinkle cheddar cheese over sauce. Melt about 2 tbsp of butter in small bowl and add about a cup of fresh breadcrumbs and 2 tbs parmesan cheese. Mix well and sprinkle over sauce. Bake at 350 F for about 35 minutes or until topping is brown and crispy.
