Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples: Different varieties of apples will give your crisp a complex flavor and texture. Try using a mix of tart and sweet apples, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady.
  • Peel and slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly.
  • Don't overcook the apples: You want them to be tender but still hold their shape.
  • Use a combination of spices: A blend of spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, will add warmth and flavor to your crisp.
  • Don't skimp on the butter: Butter adds richness and flavor to the crisp. Use unsalted butter so that you can control the amount of salt in the dish.
  • Use a combination of oats and flour: This will give the crisp a crispy topping and a chewy interior.
  • Spread the topping evenly over the apples: This will ensure that the crisp cooks evenly.
  • Bake the crisp until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling: This usually takes about 30-35 minutes.
