CHINESE PIE

Chinese Pie image

My grandmother, Julia O'Malley (Nanny), always made this when I was growing up. It is neither Chinese, nor pie, so we don't know why it was called that - it's more like a shepherd's pie, but that's what it was called in our family. Believe it or not, this is great when you smush it all together and put ketchup on it! The kids love it!

1 lb ground beef
1 can corn
2 Cups mashed potatoes (i usually use instant
1 Jar beef gravy

Steps:

  • 1. Brown ground beef, drain and add to casserole dish
  • 2. Add Corn
  • 3. Top with mashed potatoes
  • 4. Bake at 350 until potatoes are brown, serve with gravy.

Tips:

  • Prep your ingredients in advance: Dice, slice, and measure all your ingredients before you start cooking to ensure a smooth and efficient cooking process.
  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: The fresher your ingredients, the better your pie will taste. Whenever possible, opt for organic and locally-sourced produce.
  • Don't overwork the dough: Overworking the dough can make it tough and chewy. Mix the ingredients just until they come together, then stop.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough helps to develop the flavor and makes it easier to work with. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out.
  • Pre-bake the pie crust: Pre-baking the pie crust helps to prevent it from becoming soggy. To pre-bake the crust, place it in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
  • Use a variety of fillings: Chinese pies can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as meat, vegetables, eggs, and cheese. Get creative and experiment with different flavors and combinations.
  • Seal the pie crust edges tightly: To prevent the filling from leaking out, be sure to seal the pie crust edges tightly. You can do this by crimping the edges with a fork or using a pastry brush to apply a beaten egg wash.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling: The baking time will vary depending on the type of pie you are making, but as a general rule, bake the pie for 30-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
