Steps:
- Rinse cranberries: Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them. Pick out and discard any damaged or bruised cranberries.
- Stir in mix-ins, if using: Once the cranberries have burst you can leave the cranberry sauce as is, or dress it up with other ingredients. We like to mix in a half a cup of chopped pecans a pinch or two of orange zest. Some people like adding raisins or currants, or even blueberries for added sweetness. You can also add holiday spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. If adding spices, start with a pinch of each and add more to your taste.

BASIC CRANBERRY SAUCE
I was watching a cooking show one day and this recipe caught my eye because it was just too simple. I love having cranberry sauce with my dressing during Thanksgiving and thought it would be a nice change of pace from the old can version.

Steps:
- In a saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, orange zest and juice, cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and mixture thickens slightly, 12 to 15 minutes. (Sauce will thicken more as it cools.) Remove from heat; let cool completely. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 1 week.
Tips:
- Use fresh or frozen cranberries: Fresh cranberries are best, but frozen cranberries can also be used if they are thawed before cooking.
- Do not overcook: Cranberry sauce should be cooked until the cranberries are softened and burst, but not mushy. Overcooking will make the sauce bitter.
- Use a variety of sweeteners: Sugar, honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar can all be used to sweeten cranberry sauce. You can also use a combination of sweeteners.
- Add spices for flavor: Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves are all classic spices that can be added to cranberry sauce for flavor. You can also add other spices, such as cardamom, allspice, or mace.
- Add citrus zest for brightness: Orange zest, lemon zest, or lime zest can all be added to cranberry sauce for a bright, citrusy flavor.
- Use port wine for a rich flavor: Port wine is a great addition to cranberry sauce for a rich, fruity flavor. You can also use other red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
- Chill before serving: Cranberry sauce is best served chilled. This allows the flavors to meld and develop.
Conclusion:
Cranberry sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes. It is a great way to add tartness, sweetness, and color to your holiday table. With so many different recipes to choose from, you are sure to find a cranberry sauce that you and your family will love.
