Time 20m

Yield 16 poppers

Number Of Ingredients 9

16 jarred sweet piquante peppers, such as Peppadew
2 Cheddar cheese sticks
2 slices deli ham
About 3 cups canola oil, for frying
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 large egg
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Pat the peppers dry with a paper towel and set aside.
  • Wrap each cheese stick with a slice of ham, then slice the wrapped sticks into approximately 1/2-inch cubes. Stuff the wrapped cheese cubes into the peppers.
  • Heat the oil in a medium heavy-bottomed pot to 350 degrees F.
  • Set up a breading station using pie pans or plates. Put the flour in the first pie pan, then whisk together the egg and 2 tablespoons water in the second pie pan. In the third, mix together the panko, salt and pepper. Run each stuffed pepper through the breading station: lightly coat in the flour, dip in the egg wash and thoroughly coat in the panko.
  • Fry the peppers in batches in the hot oil until the breading is lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel. Serve hot.

4 large Cubanelle peppers, stemmed and seeded

Tips:

  • Choose the right peppers: Use bell peppers that are firm and have smooth skin. Avoid peppers that are bruised or have blemishes.
  • Prepare the peppers properly: Cut the tops off the peppers and remove the seeds and ribs. Rinse the peppers thoroughly and pat them dry.
  • Make sure the filling is well-seasoned: The filling should be flavorful, so don't be afraid to add plenty of herbs and spices. You can also add a bit of heat with some cayenne pepper or chili powder.
  • Stuff the peppers tightly: The filling should be packed tightly into the peppers, so that they hold their shape. If the filling is too loose, it will fall out when the peppers are baked.
  • Bake the peppers until they are tender: The peppers should be baked until they are tender, but still slightly firm. Overcooking will make the peppers mushy.

Conclusion:

Cream cheese and ham stuffed peppers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for any occasion. They are also a great way to use up leftover ham. With a few simple tips, you can make sure that your cream cheese and ham stuffed peppers turn out perfect every time. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give this recipe a try.
