Tips:

  • Fresh mussels are key: Look for mussels with tightly closed shells and no cracks or chips. Discard any mussels that are open or have broken shells.
  • Clean the mussels thoroughly: Use a stiff brush to scrub the mussels under cold water. Remove the beards (the small, fibrous strands that protrude from the shells) by pulling them out with your fingers.
  • Steam the mussels until they open: Place the mussels in a large pot with a small amount of liquid (such as white wine, broth, or water). Cover the pot and steam the mussels over medium heat until they open, about 5-7 minutes. Discard any mussels that do not open.
  • Serve the mussels immediately: Mussels are best enjoyed fresh, so serve them as soon as they are cooked. You can serve them with a variety of dipping sauces, such as melted butter, garlic butter, or aioli.
