Hearty German Farmer's Breakfast (Bauernfruhstuck) image

Great hearty rib-sticking meal for breakfast, lunch or supper! Very popular in my household. This is a versatile one-pan recipe-- you can sub or add ingredients as desired-- try ham, mushrooms, tomatoes, or chives. (Note: For an equally delicious simplified version of Bauernfruhstuck using frozen Potatoes O'Brien, please see my recipe #278230). Delicious! P.S. Any leftovers you have make a wonderful breakfast the next day--reheat a few seconds in the microwave (although I've been known to eat this cold), and serve with toast or stuff into a flour tortilla for a quick breakfast on-the-go.

BAUERNFRüSTUCK (FARMER'S BREAKFAST)

Bauernfrüstuck (Farmer's Breakfast) image

A hearty way to start the day! This recipe is so simple and you probably have the ingredients already in the fridge. We tried this will little smokies, but can't wait to try other types of sausage. Each would add a slightly different flavor that I think would be fabulous. Make sure to let the potatoes get on the crunchy side......

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 c frozen cubed hash brown potatoes
2 Tbsp oil
1/4 c chopped onion
1/4 c chopped bell pepper (any color)
10 little smokies sausages (or any other sausage you'd like)
4 eggs

Steps:

  • 1. Fry hash browns in oil in a large skillet until they start to get soft.
  • 2. Add onion, bell pepper and cook a while longer until potatoes begin to brown.
  • 3. Slice the little smokies into small pieces and add to the skillet. When potatoes are browned, crack the eggs into the skillet. Stir mixture until eggs are cooked.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: Fresh, flavorful ingredients will make all the difference in your Bauernfrühstück. Look for good-quality potatoes, bacon, and eggs.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: When cooking the potatoes, make sure to spread them out in a single layer so that they can brown evenly.
  • Cook the potatoes until they are crispy: The potatoes should be cooked until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
  • Use a flavorful bacon: The bacon is an important part of the dish, so choose a bacon that has a good smoky flavor.
  • Don't overcook the eggs: The eggs should be cooked until they are just set, so that they are still slightly runny.
  • Serve immediately: Bauernfrühstück is best served immediately, while the potatoes are still crispy and the eggs are still runny.

Conclusion:

Bauernfrühstück is a hearty and delicious breakfast dish that is perfect for a lazy weekend morning. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own personal preferences. Whether you like your potatoes crispy or soft, your bacon smoky or mild, or your eggs runny or hard, there is a Bauernfrühstück recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a satisfying and flavorful breakfast, give Bauernfrühstück a try.
