MOM'S FRENCH FRIED ONION RINGS (WITH FREEZING DIRECTIONS)

Mom's French Fried Onion Rings (With Freezing Directions) image

Another recipe from the 1980 version of the Grace Evangelical Congregational Church cookbook from Muir, Pennsylvania that was given to me by my Nana when I became an adult. This is my mom's submission to the church cookbook. I generally hate onions but even I think these are great.

Time 15m

Yield 1 onion, 4-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg (beaten)
2 teaspoons shortening (melted)
1/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Peel and Slice onion 1/4 inch thick.
  • Dip in batter made by ingredients.
  • Fry in 375 degree fat.
  • Until golden brown.

Tips:

  • Use sweet onions for the best flavor. Vidalia, Maui, and Walla Walla are all good choices.
  • Slice the onions thinly and evenly so that they cook evenly.
  • Soak the onion rings in milk for 30 minutes before coating them in batter. This will help to remove the sharp flavor of the onions and make them more tender.
  • Make sure the batter is thick enough to coat the onion rings evenly. If the batter is too thin, it will run off the onion rings and they will not be crispy.
  • Fry the onion rings in hot oil until they are golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan, or the onion rings will not cook evenly.
  • Serve the onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

French fried onion rings are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of meals. They are easy to make and can be customized to your liking. With a little practice, you can make perfect onion rings that will impress your friends and family.
