A very good friend passed this recipe along to me recently. I have read that the German immigrants brought this to America with them in the form of Hamburg steak, which was Americanized to hamburger. So this is a German hamburger. Photo: http://www.bavariankitchen.com/

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 brotchen (german rolls - or you may substitute it with 2 slices of white bread)
2 onions
1 lb hamburger
1 egg
salt, pepper, paprika to taste
1/4 c oil

Steps:

  • 1. In a small bowl, soak the roll or bread in cold water. Peel the onion and dice it fine.
  • 2. Squeeze out the bread and add it along with the onion to the hamburger meat. Add the egg, season with the spices to taste.
  • 3. With wet hands form four meat patties. Heat the oil in a large skillet and fry the meat patties on both sides, about 10 minutes or until meat is done.

Tips:

  • Use a combination of ground beef and pork for the best flavor and texture.
  • Soak the bread in milk before adding it to the meat mixture. This will help to bind the ingredients together and make the patties more tender.
  • Season the meat mixture generously with salt, pepper, and other spices. This will help to flavor the patties throughout.
  • Form the meat mixture into patties that are about 1-inch thick. This will help to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Pan-fry the patties over medium heat until they are cooked through. This will take about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Serve the frikadellen with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, or green beans.
