Time 2h

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 can(s) 1 lb,15oz b&m pork and beans
2 can(s) 1 lb each bavarian sauerkraut
1 can(s) 1 lb,1 oz applesauce
1 tsp dry mustard
1 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp seasoned salt
1/3 c chopped onion
1/4 c dark molasses
1 pkg miniature smokie sausages

Steps:

  • 1. Combine all ingredients in a 3 quart casserole or large baking dish. Bake @ 400.

Tips:

  • Choose the best beans: Look for dried beans that are plump and free of wrinkles. Avoid beans that are cracked or discolored.
  • Soak the beans overnight: Soaking the beans overnight helps to soften them and reduces the cooking time. You can also quick-soak the beans by boiling them for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: German baked beans typically include onions, celery, and carrots. You can also add other vegetables, such as green beans, corn, or potatoes.
  • Season the beans well: Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are essential seasonings for German baked beans. You can also add other spices, such as cumin, paprika, or chili powder.
  • Bake the beans on low heat: Baking the beans on low heat allows them to cook evenly and develop a rich flavor. Bake the beans for at least 2 hours, or until they are tender and slightly browned.

Conclusion:

German baked beans are a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a casual meal. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste.
