Time 1h10m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 gallon red wine
8 (3 inch) cinnamon sticks
12 whole cloves
¾ cup white sugar
½ cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 orange, sliced into rounds

Steps:

  • Pour the wine into a large pot and set over medium heat. Let it warm up until steam rises from the surface, but do not allow it to boil. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, lemon juice and sugar, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Float the orange slices on the surface. Warm over medium heat for another 5 minutes, being careful not to let it come to a boil. Remove from the heat and let stand for 1 hour.
  • Pour through a colander to remove to oranges and spices. Serve hot, or refrigerate and reheat gently just before serving in mugs.

Tips:

  • To make the most flavorful Glühwein, choose a good quality red wine. A dry or semi-dry red wine with a medium body and moderate tannins, such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon, works well.
  • Use fresh spices for the best flavor. Whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise are all classic Glühwein spices. You can also add other spices like nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom to taste.
  • Be careful not to boil the Glühwein. Bring it to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. Boiling the wine will make it taste harsh and astringent.
  • Serve Glühwein hot, but not scalding. The ideal serving temperature is between 160°F and 180°F (70°C and 80°C).
  • Garnish your Glühwein with a festive touch. A slice of orange, a cinnamon stick, or a star anise pod all make beautiful and delicious garnishes.

Conclusion:

Glühwein is the perfect holiday drink to warm you up on a cold winter day. It's also a great way to celebrate special occasions with friends and family. With its rich, spicy flavor and festive presentation, Glühwein is sure to be a hit at your next holiday party.
