Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound lean ground beef
2 tablespoons dried minced onion
1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce (such as Heinz®)
2 ½ tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon water, or as needed
½ cup salted butter, softened, or as needed

16 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef and minced in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes.

  • Butter one side of 2 slices of bread. Place one slice, butter-side down, in a new skillet over medium heat. Layer with 1 slice of American cheese, a scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture, another slice of cheese, and the second piece of bread, butter-side up. Cook until sandwich is browned on the bottom and the bottom slice of cheese is melted, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip sandwich over and repeat on the other side. Repeat to assemble and cook remaining sandwiches.

Yield 6 cups

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 nonstick cooking spray
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
½ large white onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon mustard powder
½ teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
8 oz tomato sauce, 1 can
2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
¼ cup ketchup
8 slices white bread
2 teaspoons butter, melted
¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C). Grease a 6-cup muffin tin with nonstick spray.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the mustard powder, pepper, and salt. Stir to combine, then add the tomato sauce, and cook for 5 minutes until liquid is cooked down.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce and ketchup and cook for 10 minutes, until most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove the pan from the heat.
  • Slice the crusts off the bread. Quarter 2 of the slices to make small squares, leaving the remaining 6 slices whole.
  • Press the whole slices of bread into the cups of the greased muffin tin, and brush with melted butter. Add 1 tablespoon of shredded cheddar cheese to each cup, and top with a quartered piece of bread. Brush the bread with melted butter.
  • Bake for 10 minutes, until the cheese melted.
  • Scoop 2 tablespoons of sloppy joe mixture into each cup, and top with another tablespoon of cheddar.
  • Bake for another 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the cups are firm.
  • Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.
  • Enjoy!

Time 35m

Yield 4 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground sirloin
1/2 cup yellow onion, diced
1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
2/3 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon grainy mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup chicken stock or 1/4 cup water
8 slices marbled rye bread
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup sliced pickle

Steps:

  • Set a large skillet over medium-high heat with the olive oil. Once hot, add the ground sirloin and begin breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until crispy and no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Add the onion, bell pepper and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, cayenne, and chicken stock. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened and almost evaporated completely, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool.
  • To assemble the sandwiches, lay out 4 bread slices in a single layer. Brush the bread with 3 tablespoons of the softened butter, then turn the bread over. Top each bread slice with 1/4 cup shredded cheese. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture on top of the cheese. Top with remaining cheese and top each with a slice of bread. Brush with remaining butter.
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over moderate heat. Working in batches, cook sandwiches until bread is crisp and golden and the cheese has melted, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a cutting board and cook the remaining sandwiches.
  • To serve, cut each sandwich in half and skewer with a few pickle slices on top.

Tips:

  • For crispier cups, use a smaller muffin tin.
  • If you don't have a muffin tin, you can use a mini loaf pan or even a regular loaf pan. Just be sure to adjust the baking time accordingly.
  • You can use any type of bread you like for the cups. White bread, wheat bread, or even sourdough bread will all work well.
  • For a more flavorful cup, try using a flavored bread, such as garlic bread or herb bread.
  • Be sure to cook the sloppy joe filling until it is hot and bubbly. This will help to ensure that the cups are cooked through.
  • Top the cups with your favorite cheese and then broil them until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This will give the cups a nice golden brown crust.
