Hot Dogs, Sauerkraut, and Potatoes image

This isn't an actual recipe, but it's a description of a meal my mother used to fix many years ago. She made it to use up leftover hot dogs. Recently I saw a similar one on "Zaar but it didn't have the potatoes. The amounts listed are only approximate because I was required to list something.

Time 20m

Yield 8 cups, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

4 potatoes
3 cups sauerkraut
4 frankfurters

Steps:

  • Boil peeled potatoes (cut in quarters) until tender but not mushy. Drain, and add to the pan the amount of sauerkraut for the number of people you've planned to feed. Also add hot dogs cut into 1 inch pieces. Heat everything, but watch carefully to avoid burning. Add butter if desired. We always ate this with mustard for the sauerkraut and hot dogs.
  • The next day my mother would heat leftovers in a frying pan, letting the sauerkraut get brown.

Dar's Super Savory Sauerkraut Potato Bake image

This dish has some of the flavors that I miss from my childhood in Germany. It is comfort food with a capital 'C.' I like to pair it with my own pork schnitzel or with baked chicken for a hearty dinner. This dish also includes a recipe for a creamy sauce that I use both in pot pies and as a substitute for condensed soups in many recipes. 'Guten Appetit!'

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the quality of your ingredients, the better your dish will taste. Look for fresh, organic vegetables and high-quality meat and cheese.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: This recipe is a great base, but you can easily customize it to your liking. Try using different types of sausage, vegetables, and cheeses. You can also add spices or herbs to taste.
  • Cook the potatoes until they are tender: This will ensure that they are easy to eat and that they absorb the flavors of the other ingredients.
  • Don't overcook the sauerkraut: Sauerkraut should be cooked until it is tender, but not mushy. Overcooked sauerkraut will lose its flavor and texture.
  • Serve the dish hot: This dish is best served hot, right out of the oven. You can also reheat it in the microwave or oven, but it will not be as good as when it is first made.

Conclusion:

This hot dog, potato, and sauerkraut bake is a hearty and delicious meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual gathering. It is easy to make and can be customized to your liking. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy meal, give this recipe a try!
