Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Healthy Recipes     Gluten-Free Recipes

Yield Makes enough for 2 pizzas

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 can whole Italian peeled plum tomatoes (2 pounds)
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Pour olive oil into a large skillet, and place over medium heat. Using your hands, squeeze tomatoes to crush them. Add to the warm olive oil, along with the remaining ingredients. Cook over medium-low heat, breaking up tomatoes with a wooden spoon, until the sauce is thick, 40 to 50 minutes.
  • Pass sauce through a food mill, discard the seeds, and let cool.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, ripe tomatoes. This will give your sauce the best flavor.
  • Don't overcook the sauce. Simmer it for just 30 minutes, or until the flavors have melded.
  • Add some herbs and spices to taste. Garlic, basil, oregano, and thyme are all classic pizza sauce ingredients.
  • If you like a thicker sauce, add some tomato paste. Or, if you prefer a thinner sauce, add some water.
  • Let the sauce cool slightly before using it. This will help prevent the cheese from curdling.

Conclusion:

With these tips in mind, you can make a delicious homemade pizza sauce that will impress your friends and family. So next time you're making pizza, don't reach for the jarred sauce. Instead, take a few minutes to make your own. You won't be disappointed!
