1 1/2 c all purpose flour
1/2 c yellow cornmeal
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp kosher salt, plus more for sprinkling
1 1/2 tsp sugar
2 tsp onion powder
1 large egg
1 c whole milk
vegetable oil, for frying

Steps:

  • 1. Combine the onions, flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, sugar, and onion powder in a bowl. Whisk the egg and milk in another bowl. Whisk the egg mixture into the flour mixture until smooth. Cover and chill 30 minutes.
  • 2. Heat 2 inches vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat until deep-fry thermometer registers 350 degrees.
