Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe

Provided by mm_food4me

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (8-ounce) package elbow macaroni, cooked
2 cups cream-style cottage cheese
2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1 (8-ounce) carton sour cream
1 egg, lightly beaten
3/4 teaspoon salt
Paprika

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 2-quart casserole, or baking dish. Cook macaroni following package directions. Drain. Combine cottage cheese, cheese, sour cream, egg and salt. Fold in macaroni. Spoon into casserole. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality cheese: The type of cheese you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your macaroni and cheese. Use a sharp cheddar cheese for a classic flavor, or experiment with other types of cheese, such as Gruyère, Parmesan, or Fontina.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente: The macaroni should be cooked al dente, or slightly firm to the bite. This will prevent it from becoming mushy when you bake it.
  • Make a roux: A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that is used to thicken the sauce. This will help to prevent the sauce from becoming watery.
  • Use milk and cream: Milk and cream are used to make the sauce creamy and flavorful. You can use whole milk, skim milk, or a combination of the two. If you want a richer sauce, use more cream.
  • Season the sauce: Be sure to season the sauce with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add other ingredients to the sauce, such as cooked bacon, diced tomatoes, or chopped green onions.
  • Top with cheese: Before baking, top the macaroni and cheese with a layer of grated cheese. This will help to create a golden brown crust.
  • Bake until bubbly: Bake the macaroni and cheese until it is bubbly and the cheese is melted and golden brown. This will usually take about 30 minutes.

Macaroni and cheese is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages.
