Steps:
- 1. 8 am. dice up the onion and celery, place in crock pot. Pour in can of tomatoes, including juice.
- 2. whisk together beef broth and 5 tbs of flour. add to mixture in crock pot. add salt and pepper to taste, stir.
- 3. trim any fat off steak and cut into app 3 ounce serving size pieces. salt and pepper, then dredge in flour and flash brown steaks in canola oil. They do not have to be cooked all the way done, we are just browning the outsides!
- 4. add steak to crock pot, sinking the meat below the surface of the sauce. Put lid on pot, set to low and cook until 5 pm or so!! enjoy!
Tips:
- Choose the right cut of beef. The best cuts for Swiss steak are chuck roast, round steak, or sirloin steak. These cuts are tough, but they become tender when cooked slowly in a flavorful sauce.
- Tenderize the beef. Pounding the beef with a meat mallet or using a fork to poke holes in it will help to tenderize it and allow the marinade to penetrate more deeply.
- Marinate the beef. Marinating the beef for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, will help to infuse it with flavor and make it more tender.
- Brown the beef. Browning the beef before simmering it will help to develop its flavor and color.
- Use a flavorful sauce. The sauce is a key component of Swiss steak, so be sure to use one that is flavorful and has a good balance of sweetness and acidity.
- Cook the beef slowly. Swiss steak is a slow-cooked dish, so be patient and let it simmer for at least 1 hour, or until the beef is fall-apart tender.
- Serve with your favorite sides. Swiss steak is traditionally served with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or spätzle. You can also serve it with roasted vegetables or a salad.
Conclusion:
Swiss steak is a classic comfort food dish that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its tender beef, flavorful sauce, and simple ingredients, Swiss steak is a dish that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give Swiss steak a try.
