Mulled Wine Spice -- Gift Mix image

I think this is a wonderful gift for the Holiday season. It is quite easy to make, looks super fancy and tastes so yummy! Id suggest pairing this with one bottle (750 ml) of red wine or grape juice as it makes enough for that amount of liquid.

Yield 1 spice mix jar

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 tablespoons whole cloves
3 star anise
3 tablespoons dried orange peel (can also use candied peel)

3 cinnamon sticks, broken in half

  • Mix all of the ingredients and fill into a cleaned and sterilised jar (I used a small jam jar for this).
  • Tie with a pretty ribbon and attach a gift tag with the following instructions:.
  • Empty the contents of the wine bottle and of the spice mix jar into a pot. Heat on medium until nearly boiling, but DO NOT boil. Heat for 30 minutes, then strain the mulled wine and return it to the pot. Keep it warm if you want to serve it straight away, if not allow to cool and reheat when ready to use. You can also add some rum for a stronger version.

Number Of Ingredients 8

25cm square butter muslin (available from department & hardware stores)
85g demerara sugar
1 tsp ground ginger
½ tsp ground nutmeg
1 cinnamon stick
70cl bottle red wine
8 - 12 cloves
1 orange

Steps:

  • Put the muslin on a flat surface and tip the sugar, ginger and nutmeg into the centre. Tie into a pouch with fine string and attach to the neck of the wine bottle. Then attach the cinnamon stick to the bottle with a little raffia.
  • Stick the cloves into the orange and pack into a box lined with raffia or shredded paper, with the wine.
  • Tie a label to the wine bottle with the following instructions: 'Tip the contents of the muslin bag into a pan with the wine, orange, cinnamon stick and 300ml/½pt water. Simmer for 5 mins, then serve.'

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality ingredients. Look for fresh, flavorful spices and organic oranges. The better the ingredients, the better your mulled wine will be.
  • Toast the spices before using them. This will bring out their flavor and aroma.
  • Use a variety of spices. This will give your mulled wine a complex and interesting flavor.
