HOMEMADE PIZZA SAUCE FROM SCRATCH

Homemade Pizza Sauce from Scratch image

I noticed that most (all?) the pizza sauce recipes call for either tomato paste or tomato sauce or both. I wanted to do it from scratch! So I experimented until I got it right. This is much better than the store-bought sauce with none of those nasty preservatives.

Categories     Sauces

Time 10m

Yield 6-8 medium pizzas

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (29 ounce) can tomato puree
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 cup salad oil
2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon oregano
1 tablespoon parsley flakes

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Do not cook.
  • Stores well.
  • Freezes well.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality tomatoes. Fresh, ripe tomatoes are best, but canned tomatoes can also be used. If using canned tomatoes, choose whole tomatoes that are packed in tomato juice, not water.
  • Roast the tomatoes before making the sauce. Roasting the tomatoes concentrates their flavor and gives the sauce a deeper, richer taste.
  • Use fresh herbs. Fresh basil, oregano, and thyme are all great additions to pizza sauce. If you don't have fresh herbs on hand, you can use dried herbs, but use half the amount.
  • Don't overcook the sauce. Pizza sauce should be simmered for 30 minutes to an hour, or until it has thickened and the flavors have melded. Overcooking the sauce will make it lose its flavor.
  • Taste the sauce as you go and adjust the seasonings as needed. You may need to add more salt, pepper, or herbs to taste.

Conclusion:

Making pizza sauce from scratch is easy and rewarding. It's a great way to use up fresh tomatoes and herbs, and it tastes so much better than store-bought sauce. With a little practice, you'll be able to make a delicious pizza sauce that your whole family will love.
