ORIENTAL GARDEN PILAF

Oriental Garden Pilaf image

This recipe is from a box of Mother's Quick Cooking Barley. I only made it because I wanted to get rid of some celery, but it was quite good! I'm posting the recipe as it appears on the box, but I made the following changes: consomme instead of the broth; and I skipped the oil completely. I also used yellow onions.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality rice: Long-grain rice, such as basmati or jasmine rice, works best for pilaf because it cooks evenly and doesn't clump together.
  • Rinse the rice thoroughly before cooking: This removes the starch from the rice, which helps prevent it from becoming gummy.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot: A heavy-bottomed pot will distribute heat evenly and prevent the rice from burning.
  • Toast the rice before cooking: Toasting the rice in a little oil or butter before adding the liquid helps bring out its flavor.
  • Use a flavorful liquid: Chicken or vegetable broth, or even water flavored with saffron or turmeric, will add flavor to the pilaf.
  • Add vegetables, nuts, or dried fruit: Vegetables like carrots, celery, and onions are classic additions to pilaf, but you can also add nuts like almonds or pistachios, or dried fruit like raisins or cranberries.
  • Let the pilaf rest before serving: After cooking, let the pilaf rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the rice to absorb all the flavors and become fluffy.

Conclusion:

Oriental Garden Pilaf is a flavorful and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a main course or side dish. With its combination of aromatic spices, tender vegetables, and fluffy rice, it's sure to please everyone at your table. So next time you're looking for a delicious and easy-to-make pilaf recipe, give Oriental Garden Pilaf a try!
