PARTY BEANS

I have been making these baked beans since the 70's and have always gotten rave reviews. They are so easy to make. This recipe is big enough for a crowd but can be cut in half for a family dinner. They are good hot out of the oven or served cold. They are even better after sitting in the fridge for a few days. If you don't...

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb bacon, cut in to bite size pieces and cooked until crisp
1 c brown sugar, firmly packed
2 can(s) 1-lb 15-oz pork and beans, drained
2 can(s) 15-oz kidney beans, drained
2 can(s) 15-oz butter beans, drained
2 large onions, chopped
1 1/2 c ketchup

Steps:

  • 1. Cook bacon until crisp, remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Saute onion in bacon fat until tender.
  • 2. Drain fat and, in same pan, add brown sugar, ketchup and onions together and stir to make a syrup. Add drained beans and cooked bacon to syrup mixture and mix well.
  • 3. Spray 13x9 casserole dish with Pam and add bean mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right beans: Different types of beans have different flavors and textures. For example, black beans are earthy and slightly sweet, while kidney beans are more robust and nutty. Choose beans that you enjoy the taste of and that will complement the other ingredients in your dish.
  • Soak the beans: Soaking the beans overnight helps to soften them and reduces the cooking time. It also helps to remove some of the gas-producing compounds in the beans, which can make them easier to digest.
  • Season the beans well: Beans are a blank canvas for flavor, so don't be afraid to season them generously. Use a variety of herbs, spices, and aromatics to create a flavorful dish. Some good options include garlic, onion, cumin, chili powder, and paprika.
  • Cook the beans until they are tender: The cooking time for beans will vary depending on the type of beans and how they are cooked. Be sure to cook the beans until they are tender but not mushy. You can test the beans by mashing one with a fork. If the bean mashes easily, it is done.

Conclusion:

Party beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be served as an appetizer, side dish, or main course. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With so many different recipes to choose from, you're sure to find a party bean recipe that you'll love.
