1 cup beer, or as needed
1 (7 ounce) container shake and pour buttermilk pancake mix
2 pounds trout fillets
½ cup oil for frying

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Pour beer into the pancake mix container in place of the water it calls for. Make the batter as thick or thin as you prefer. Close the lid, give it a few shakes, and boom it's done.
  • Dip fish into the batter using a pair of tongs, or if you want to dirty a dish, pour the batter in a bowl first. If you cut your fish into smaller pieces, you can toss them into the container, close the lid and shake it a couple of times, then carefully remove the coated pieces.
  • Remove the fish from the batter using tongs, and place into the hot oil. Fry the fish until golden brown on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes per side.

Tips:

  • Use a light beer for the batter, as it will give you a crispy coating without overpowering the fish.
  • Don't overmix the batter, as this will make it tough.
  • Season the batter with salt and pepper, and add other herbs or spices to taste.
  • Use a large skillet or deep fryer to cook the fish, so that it has plenty of room to fry.
  • Heat the oil to the correct temperature before frying the fish, to ensure that it cooks evenly and doesn't stick to the pan.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when frying the fish, as this will lower the temperature of the oil and make the fish greasy.
  • Fry the fish until it is golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Drain the fish on paper towels before serving, to remove any excess oil.

Conclusion:

Poor man's beer batter fish is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a quick and casual meal. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a crispy and flavorful fish that will be sure to please everyone at the table.
