STEW MEAT CHILI

Stew Meat Chili image

I came across this from a old recipe book I had from years ago. If you want it milder, you might want to cut down on thwe chili powder.

Provided by weekend cooker

Categories     Vegetable

Time 6h15m

Yield 4-6 bowls, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 lbs premium cut stew meat
1 onion, chopped
2 (15 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
2 (15 ounce) cans pinto beans, liquid reserved
1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons ground oregano
salt (optional)
cheddar cheese (topping)

Steps:

  • If stew meat is in fairly large pieces, cut each piece in half.
  • In a large skillet, brown stew meat and transfer to a large slow cooker.
  • Add onion, tomatoes, beans, seasonings, and salt to taste.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over each serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of meat: Chuck roast or stew meat are commonly used for chili because they become tender when cooked slowly. You can also use ground beef, ground turkey, or a combination of meats.
  • Brown the meat before simmering: This step adds flavor and depth to the chili. Be sure to drain off any excess grease before adding the meat to the pot.
  • Use a variety of beans: Different beans offer different textures and flavors. Common choices include kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, and cannellini beans.
  • Add vegetables for nutrition and flavor: Onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes are classic chili vegetables. You can also add corn, zucchini, or any other vegetables you like.
  • Season the chili to taste: Chili is a versatile dish that can be customized to your liking. Add chili powder, cumin, garlic, and salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a touch of sweetness with brown sugar or honey.
  • Let the chili simmer for a long time: The longer the chili simmers, the more flavorful it will be. Aim for at least 2 hours, but you can simmer it for up to 4 hours.
  • Serve the chili with your favorite toppings: Popular toppings include shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped onions, and diced avocado.

Conclusion:

Slow-cooked stew meat chili is a hearty, flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can create a delicious chili that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you're looking for a comforting and satisfying meal, give this slow-cooked stew meat chili a try!
