SLOW COOKER SPLIT PEA AND HAM SOUP

Slow Cooker Split Pea and Ham Soup image

Easy and delicious! Very thick and hearty! Freezes well! (I always make a double batch and freeze 2/3.) Update: If you overcook, the soup will get even thicker than usual! and turn a little bit of an olive drab color--it will still taste good though!

Tips:

  • Use a good quality ham bone. This will give your soup a richer flavor. You can also use a ham steak or leftover ham, but the bone will give you the most flavor.
  • Soak the split peas before cooking. This will help them to cook more evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy. You can soak them overnight in water, or for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. This will give your soup more flavor and texture. Some good vegetables to use include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and turnips.
  • Season your soup to taste. Salt, pepper, and garlic are all good spices to start with. You can also add other spices, such as thyme, rosemary, or marjoram.
  • Serve your soup with a side of bread or crackers. This will help to soak up the delicious broth.
