I can't remember were this recipe came from, but I've been making it for several years. Everyone who tries it enjoys it. When the chicken is done cooking, it's so tender it falls off the bone.-Mrs. Patricia Weir, Chilliwack, British Columbia

This is from Taste of Home Slow Cooker Hot and Hearty Classics. It makes a lot of sauce (about 2 Cups) which is great if serving over noodles or rice. In my case, I was serving it with a side of vegetables so I would reduce the sauce for that reason. I did make one change to this recipe and that was to cook just the chicken for 2 hours, then I drained the fat and added the sauce, but you can do whatever you like.

Time 6h10m

Yield 6 , 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 (4 lb) whole chickens, cut up and skin removed
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup flour
2/3 cup water
1/3 cup white vinegar
1/3 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon minced dried onion
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Place chicken pieces in 3-4 Qt slow cooker.
  • In small saucepan, combine brown sugar and flour, stir in water, vinegar, soy sauce.
  • Add ketchup, dried onion, mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
  • Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 1-2 minutes to thicken.
  • Pour sauce over chicken and cook on low 6-8 hours.
  • Serve with rice or noodles.

Tips:

  • Choose the right chicken: Boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs are both good choices for this recipe. If you're using chicken breasts, slice them into thin strips so they cook quickly and evenly.
  • Use a large skillet: A large skillet will give the chicken plenty of room to cook without overcrowding. If you don't have a large skillet, you can cook the chicken in batches.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you overcrowd the skillet, the chicken will steam instead of fry and it won't get crispy.
  • Cook the chicken over medium heat: Medium heat will help the chicken cook evenly without burning.
  • Don't overcook the chicken: Overcooked chicken is tough and dry. Cook the chicken until it is cooked through but still tender and juicy.
  • Make the sauce ahead of time: The sauce can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 3 days. This will save you time when you're ready to make the chicken.
  • Serve the chicken with your favorite sides: Sweet and saucy chicken is delicious served with rice, noodles, or vegetables.

Conclusion:

Sweet and saucy chicken is a quick and easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love. It's made with simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand. The chicken is cooked in a flavorful sauce that is sweet, savory, and slightly spicy. Serve it over rice, noodles, or vegetables for a complete meal.
