Chocolate Sauerkraut Dessert Pie image

Another fabulous idea from Pat, Sauerkraut Pie. When I heard about this, I ran with it and made this recipe. Please enjoy!

Number Of Ingredients 18

FILLING
1 can(s) sauerkraut, rinsed thoroughly
1 c shredded coconut
1 c half and half
3 eggs
1 1/2 c dark brown sugar
2 Tbsp vanillla
1 tsp almond extract
1 1/2 Tbsp special dark cocoa powder
1 c dark chocolate chips
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp allspice, ground
TOPPING
2 Tbsp demerara sugar
holiday sprinkles, optional
CRUST
1 cinnamon coconut pie crust

Steps:

  • 1. Mix all filling ingredients in a mixing bowl, mixing completely. Set aside.
  • 2. Prepare pie crust. If making heavily exposed pie crust, use a pie ring or cover entire pie with tin foil for half of the cooking time. Use this recipe: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/dessert/pie/cinnamon-coconut-pie-crust.html
  • 3. Pour in filling. Sprinkle toppings.
  • 4. Place in oven at 350F for 30-40 minutes, or until the center is set.
  • 5. Refrigerate for 3 hours-overnight.

I love chocolate and I love sauerkraut, so I was excited to try this recipe. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The flavors didn't blend well together and the texture was strange. I would not recommend this recipe.
