Ginger Ale Ham Glaze for Easter Dinner image

I created this recipe to glaze the 10 pound Hillshire Spiral Ham that I made for our 2014 Easter Dinner. I simply substituted ginger ale for another liquid ingredient I had used in another recipe. The glaze was thick and rich and just the right amber color to go over the ham. It is a very simple recipe and the addition of...

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 c good quality ginger ale
1 c stone ground mustard
1 c brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 Tbsp butter

Steps:

  • 1. These are the main ingredients to make the Ham glaze.
  • 2. Add the ginger ale, ground mustard cloves, and brown sugar to a medium sauce pan. Stir to blend.
  • 3. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, whisking as you go. Do not leave sauce pan idle, or it can quickly boil over. Continue to stir as glaze will thicken in just a few minutes about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • 4. When glaze becomes syrupy remove from heat and add butter, then stir till butter melts, then brush glaze over ham, return ham to oven, and bake for 10 minutes, repeat steps for 2 additional times till ham is completely glazed and glistens from the glaze. Allow to cool separate and arrange slices on serving platter.
  • 5. Serve extra sauce as desired to go with ham slices.

This glaze is a great way to add flavor to a ham. I especially like the combination of ginger ale and brown sugar. The glaze is easy to make and can be used on either a baked or smoked ham.

This glaze was a bit too sweet for my taste. I think I would have preferred a more savory glaze. However, the ham was still moist and flavorful, so I would still recommend this recipe to others.

This glaze was easy to make and added a nice flavor to the ham. However, I found that it didn't thicken as much as I would have liked. Next time, I'll try adding a cornstarch slurry to thicken the glaze.
