Number Of Ingredients 7

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons cold butter or 6 tablespoons margarine
2 cups buttermilk

Steps:

  • in mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt.
  • stir thoroughly.
  • cut in butter till crumbly,.
  • add buttermilk.
  • stir just enough to moisten.
  • turn on lightly floured surface.
  • knead 8 to 10 times.
  • put in greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
  • bake at 350 for 1 hour or until browned and inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  • this may also be baked in a casserole or on a baking sheet.
  • VARIATION;add one cup raisins or currants.

This soda bread is so easy to make and it always turns out great. I've made it several times now and it's become a family favorite. We love it toasted with butter and jam, or just plain.
