I love sauerkraut cooked in brown sugar. I love it sweet with just a hint of sour. This recipe is the same. Cabbage and peppers with vinegar and sugar give it that sweet and sour flavor. The cabbage gives it a slight crunch though unlike kraut. This is known as 'Amish Slaw or Pickled cabbage' as well. It goes great with anything...

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 head cabbage, shredded fine
1 red bell pepper, chopped fine
1 onion, chopped fine
2 c sugar
1 c white vinegar
1 tsp mustard seed, crushed
1 tsp celery seed
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • 1. I have used my food processor to chop the ingredients and I have done it by hand. Either way will be work as long as you cut everything "fine".
  • 2. Combine cabbage, red bell pepper, and onion.
  • 3. Mix sugar, vinegar, mustard seed, celery seed, salt and pepper. Pour over cabbage mixture. Stir to combine.
  • 4. Chill overnight or for several days. Keeps well in refrigerator. Enjoy!

This slaw is a great way to get your kids to eat their vegetables. My kids love the sweet and tangy dressing, and they always ask for seconds.

I love that this recipe uses red bell pepper instead of green. It gives the slaw a beautiful color and a slightly sweet flavor.

This slaw is a great make-ahead dish. I made it the night before a party, and it was even better the next day. The flavors had really had time to meld together.

I'm not usually a fan of coleslaw, but this recipe changed my mind. The dressing is light and flavorful, and the cabbage is nice and crisp. I will definitely be making this again.
