Want to use up that old bread rather than throwing it out? Try this recipe, the older the bread the better! I found this on a website and altered it for my family. Due to an egg allergy I cannot try this, but is smelt fabulous!

Time 1h

Yield 3-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 -12 slices of crusty baguette or 8 -12 slices ciabatta, style bread. at least a day old
2 cups milk
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter, for frying
1/4 cup icing sugar

Steps:

  • If you are using ciabatta bread - 8 slices is the maximum.
  • In a saucepan, place the milk, sugar, zests, juices, vanilla and spices. Simmer for 5-7 minutes (it will start to smell amazing!).
  • Cool the mix for 5 minutes.
  • Add the bread all at once and leave it there to soak up all that goodness, allow a good 20 minutes.
  • Beat the eggs in a seperate bowl and in batches, carefully coat the bread.
  • In a large heavy based fry pan, add the butter (start with 2 tablespoons) and sizzle over a medium heat until fragrant.
  • Add 6 - 8 slices of bread (depending on the size of your pan - don't over crowd it) and cook for 3-4 minutes each side. Add more butter for each batch you make.
  • Repeat until all the bread has been fried.
  • Place the bread on a plate and sprinkle with icing sugar and serve warm.

This is my new favorite French toast recipe! The orange zest and cinnamon give it a unique and delicious flavor. I love that it's also a great way to use up stale bread. I'll definitely be making this again soon.

I love that this recipe uses stale bread. It's a great way to use up leftover bread and reduce food waste. The French toast was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just the way I like it.

This recipe was a bit too sweet for my taste. I would recommend using less sugar or omitting it altogether. Otherwise, the French toast was well-executed and had a nice texture.

I'm not a fan of orange zest, so I omitted it from the recipe. The French toast was still delicious, but I missed the extra flavor that the orange zest would have added. Next time, I'll try using a different citrus zest, like lemon or grapefruit.

I've tried many French toast recipes, but this one takes the cake! The combination of bread, eggs, milk, and spices creates a perfect balance of flavors. The orange zest adds a subtle sweetness that complements the cinnamon and nutmeg. Two thumbs up!
