This recipe evolved with my trying to duplicate the taste of Campbell's Bean with Bacon soup, so I would not have to use canned soups all the time. It comes pretty close. I still find myself using the cans, but this has become a family favorite.

Steps:
- 1. Soak beans 6 hours or overnight. Drain off soaking liquid.
- 2. Place soaked beans, 2 quarts water, bacon, carrot, and onion in a large soup pot or crock pot. Cook 1 1/2 hours until beans are soft (at least 6 hours on low in crock pot). Add water if necessary to maintain soup-like consistency.
- 3. When beans are done, stir in tomato sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Heat through about 10 minutes (30 minutes on high for crock pot).
- 4. Serve with corn bread, or over spoon bread.
