Using the air fryer results in onions rings that are crispy and crunchy without using a ton of oil. Here's a recipe that shows you how.

Categories     Side Dish     Snack

Time 26m

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 large sweet onions
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
Optional: creamy dipping sauces, honey mustard, or ketchup (for serving)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients. Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 200 F.
  • Cut off both ends of the onions and peel off the skin.
  • Slice the onions into thick rings.
  • Carefully separate the rings from each other. Save the innermost rings for another recipe. If the rings break, you can still use them.
  • Prepare the 3 dredging bowls. Put the flour in 1 shallow bowl. Beat the eggs and milk in another shallow bowl. Add the panko breadcrumbs to a third shallow bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt, then divide the mixture evenly among the 3 bowls. Whisk each bowl to disperse the seasonings.
  • Dip the onion rings in the flour first. Completely coat both sides of the rings and the inner portion.
  • Dip the flour-coated rings into the egg mixture. Make sure to completely coat them with the egg so you cannot see any of the flour. You may need to flip the rings a few times.
  • Dip the rings in the breadcrumb mixture. To thoroughly coat them, use your fingers to press the breadcrumbs onto the rings.
  • Generously spray the inside of the air fryer with cooking spray. Carefully place a single layer of the onion rings into the air fryer and spray the tops with cooking spray. Cook on 375 F for 10 minutes, flipping each ring halfway through the cooking time.
  • Transfer the first batch to a baking sheet and place in the oven to keep warm. Cook the second batch of rings. Serve with creamy dipping sauce , honey mustard , and ketchup if desired.

Provided by Chef Wheeler del Torro

Categories     Appetizers and Snacks

Time 22m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 large onion, cut into rings
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 cup bread crumbs
cooking spray
2 pinches garlic powder
2 pinches paprika

Steps:

  • Stir flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Dip onion rings into the flour mixture until coated; set aside.
  • Whisk milk and egg into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat. Place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping.
  • Place bread crumbs in a shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs and scoop the crumbs over the rings to coat evenly. Give rings a hard tap as you remove them from the crumbs; the coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Heat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) according to manufacturer's instructions. Place rings side by side in the frying basket. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Flip rings and place basket in the air fryer. Cook until rings are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip once halfway through. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with garlic powder and paprika.

AIR FRYER ONION RINGS WITH ONION DIP

Air Fryer Onion Rings with Onion Dip image

Onions are probably one of my favorite pantry ingredients: they're inexpensive, full of flavor and have a long shelf life. However, they don't always get to be the star of the show-until now! The air fryer is a great tool for making a gluten-free version of traditional onion rings, here accompanied by an onion dip made with, yes, raw onions. Soaking the onions in buttermilk helps take away some of the bite!

Provided by Carla Hall

Categories     side-dish

Time 55m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 large sweet onion, sliced into rings
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup gluten-free potato flakes
1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle
Kosher salt
1 large egg
1 cup gluten-free panko
2 teaspoons dried chives, optional
Nonstick cooking spray
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup scallions, white and green parts, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
1/2 to 1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper or black pepper, or to taste
1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
Pinch dried chives

Steps:

  • For the onion rings: Separate the onion rings, place in a shallow dish with the buttermilk and soak for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 375 degrees F. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
  • Set out three shallow bowls for dredging. Whisk the potato flakes, ground chipotle and 1/2 teaspoon salt in one bowl. Whisk the egg, 2 tablespoons water and a little salt together in another bowl. Mix the panko, dried chives if using and 1/2 teaspoon salt together in the third bowl.
  • Spray the basket of the air fryer lightly with cooking spray. Drain the buttermilk from the onions; reserve 1/3 cup of the buttermilk for making the raw onion dip.
  • Dip each ring one at a time in the potato flake mixture, then in the egg mixture and finally in the panko mixture. Working in batches, put the onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Cook until golden and crisp all over, about 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. Transfer the cooked rings to a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven while cooking the remaining rings.
  • For the raw onion dip: Stir the red onion, the buttermilk reserved from the onion rings, the sour cream, scallions, garlic powder, salt, pepper and lemon zest together in a large bowl until completely combined. Let sit 5 to 10 minutes for the flavors to blend. Garnish with the dried chives. Serve immediately with the hot onion rings or refrigerate, covered, for up to 3 days.

Tips for Making the Best Air Fryer BBQ Onion Rings:

  • Choose the right onions. Sweet onions, such as Vidalia or Maui, are best for onion rings because they have a mild flavor that won't overpower the other ingredients.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the onions into evenly sized rings. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Soak the onion rings in milk for 15 minutes before coating them in the batter. This will help to remove the sharp flavor of the onions and make them more tender.
  • Use a light touch when coating the onion rings in the batter. Too much batter will make them soggy.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit before cooking the onion rings. This will help them to cook evenly.
  • Cook the onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. This will help them to cook evenly and prevent them from sticking together.
  • Cook the onion rings for 8-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through cooking.
  • Serve the onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Air fryer BBQ onion rings are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or snack. They are perfect for parties or game day gatherings. With a few simple ingredients and a few minutes of your time, you can enjoy these crispy and flavorful onion rings without the guilt of deep-frying.
