AIR-FRIED BREADED CHICKEN THIGHS

Air-Fried Breaded Chicken Thighs image

Wonderfully crisp and juicy air-fried chicken thighs. These won't get crispy all the way around on the bottom, but it's an easy oil-free way to get that crunch on top with just a few steps. Let the air fryer do all the work!

Provided by Rebekah Rose Hills

Time 1h40m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 medium bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
1 cup buttermilk
¼ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup plain bread crumbs
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
½ teaspoon ground paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon black pepper
nonstick cooking spray

Steps:

  • Place chicken thighs and buttermilk in a non-reactive container with a lid or a resealable plastic bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  • Remove chicken from the refrigerator. Pour off buttermilk and let chicken rest on the counter while preparing the breading mixture.
  • Combine flour, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, paprika, garlic powder, salt, onion powder, and black pepper in a large, shallow bowl or pie plate; whisk or stir with a fork until evenly combined.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 375 to 380 degrees F (190 to 195 degrees C). Spray air fryer basket lightly with nonstick spray.
  • Once air fryer is hot, press chicken thighs, 1 at a time, into the breading mixture and make sure breading sticks onto all sides as much as possible. Gently set into the air fryer basket. Repeat until all thighs are breaded and in the basket. Do not stack them on top of each other.
  • Set air fryer for 25 minutes. When the time is up check temperature with an instant-read thermometer. Internal temperature should be 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). If they aren't quite done but the breading is getting dark, just close the basket again and let them rest, or you can turn the air fryer on again for a few minutes and check again. Serve immediately.

Time 1h2m

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 pounds chicken drumsticks
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
2 teaspoons McCormick's Grill Mates Montreal Chicken Seasoning
salt and pepper to taste
cooking oil spray

Steps:

  • Drizzle the chicken with the buttermilk. You can place the chicken in a bowl or in a Ziploc bag. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil.
  • Add the panko breadcrumbs to a bowl with the chicken seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir.
  • Dredge the buttermilk chicken in the panko breadcrumbs mixture. Spray both sides of the chicken with cooking oil.
  • Place the chicken in the air fryer basket and cook for 10 minutes on 380 degrees.
  • Open the air fryer and flip the chicken. Cook the chicken for an additional 10-14 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use your judgment for how long the chicken should cook. I like to ensure my chicken has a crispy exterior, in addition to reaching the appropriate internal temperature.
  • Tip: If you notice the chicken has formed a crunchy brown crust on the outside but needs more time to cook internally, lower the temperature on the air fryer to 350 degrees and continue cooking the chicken until it reaches the appropriate internal temperature.
  • Cool before serving.

½ cup cornflake crumbs
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon Cajun seasoning
¼ teaspoon chili powder
¼ teaspoon paprika

Tips:

  • Choose the right chicken legs: Look for chicken legs that are evenly sized and have a good amount of meat on them. Avoid chicken legs that are too small or have a lot of bones.
  • Brine the chicken legs: Brining the chicken legs in a mixture of water, salt, and sugar helps to keep them moist and flavorful. You can brine the chicken legs for up to 24 hours, but even a few hours will make a difference.
  • Use a good breading: The breading is what gives the chicken legs their crispy coating. Use a breading that is made with a mixture of flour, cornstarch, and spices. You can also add herbs or other flavorings to the breading.
  • Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket: When you air fry the chicken legs, don't overcrowd the air fryer basket. This will prevent the chicken legs from cooking evenly.
  • Cook the chicken legs at a high temperature: Air fry the chicken legs at a high temperature (400 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) for a short amount of time. This will help to create a crispy coating and juicy meat.

Conclusion:

Air fryer breaded chicken legs are a delicious and easy-to-make meal. They are perfect for a weeknight dinner or a party appetizer. With a little planning and preparation, you can have crispy, flavorful chicken legs that everyone will love.
