Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 c unbleached white flour
2 tsp white sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt, divided
1 tsp black pepper
2 Tbsp yellow cornmeal
2 c chopped white onion
1 c milk
1 c vegetable oil

Steps:

  • 1. In a large mixing bowl whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper.
  • 2. Add chopped onions, tossing with a fork to coat well with flour mixture.
  • 3. Make a well, pour in milk and stir to just combined.
  • 4. Add oil to a large skillet and heat to medium high.
  • 5. Drop batter by 1/4 cup into hot oil, cooking for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 6. Carefully turn patties and cook for another 2 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 7. Drain patties on a wire rack, lightly salt, repeat above steps cooking the remaining batter.
  • 8. Serve hot with options like ketchup, salsa, ranch dressing or do what I do, put it on my burger.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp knife to thinly slice the onions. This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the onions. If the onions are too crowded, they will not cook evenly and will become soggy.
  • Cook the onions over medium heat. This will help them caramelize and develop a rich flavor.
  • Stir the onions occasionally while cooking. This will help prevent them from burning.
  • Add the flour to the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the flour is absorbed. This will help thicken the onion mixture and prevent it from becoming too runny.
  • Add the milk, salt, and pepper to the onion mixture and bring to a simmer. Stir constantly until the mixture has thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Form the onion mixture into patties and fry them in a pan with hot oil until golden brown. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan, or the patties will not cook evenly.
  • Serve the onion patties with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, or a salad.

Conclusion:

Amish onion patties are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal or a potluck. They are made with simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand, and they can be customized to your liking. For example, you can add different herbs or spices to the onion mixture, or you can use a different type of breadcrumb. No matter how you make them, Amish onion patties are sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
