Number Of Ingredients 14

1 loaf challah, sliced 1" thick
3-5 apples, sliced
2 cups dark brown sugar
8 eggs
3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup half & half
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier

Steps:

  • Combine the syrup, butter and brown sugar in a saucepan and simmer gently until the sugar melts. Pour this mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x12" casserole dish. Layer the apples over the sugar mixture, sprinkle with cinnamon, and place the bread slices over the apples. Beat together the eggs, milk, half & half, vanilla, spices, and Grand Marnier. Pour the custard over the bread. Cover the dish and let stand overnight in refrigerator. The following morning, preheat oven to 350F. Uncover the casserole dish and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality bread: A sturdy bread like French bread or brioche will hold up well to the overnight soaking and cooking process.
  • Don't skimp on the butter: Butter adds richness and flavor to the French toast. Use real butter, not margarine, for the best results.
  • Use a variety of spices: In addition to cinnamon, you can also add nutmeg, allspice, or ginger to the French toast batter. This will give it a more complex flavor.
  • Soak the bread for at least 8 hours: This will give the bread time to absorb the liquid and become tender. You can soak the bread for up to 24 hours, but 8 hours is usually sufficient.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: This will help to prevent the French toast from burning. Cook the French toast until it is golden brown on both sides.
  • Serve the French toast with your favorite toppings: Some popular toppings include maple syrup, whipped cream, fruit, and powdered sugar.

Conclusion:

Apple cinnamon overnight French toast is a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast or brunch dish. It is perfect for a special occasion or a lazy weekend morning. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of planning, you can enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal that the whole family will love.
