The Best Homemade Applesauce image

After tasting the pure apple flavor of this homemade sauce, you just might never go back to the store-bought kind. Supermarket applesauce can be loaded with added sweeteners and flavorings. We use only a little sugar, plus lemon juice, salt and cinnamon, providing a balanced flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Time 1h35m

Yield about 5 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

APPLE YAM DELIGHT

Apple Yam Delight image

An all new way to enjoy the natural sweetness of Yams. Not a casserole...not a side dish. It's a delicious dessert that you can serve hot, cold, alone or topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Anyway you serve it, it's Yamtastic! This recipe comes from Princella. I found this recipe in Woman's Day magazine. I have not tried this recipe, but I'm posting it for safe keeping.

Provided by internetnut

Categories     Low Protein

Time 45m

Yield 4-5 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

16 ounces princella yams, cut in bite size
16 ounces chunky style applesauce
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup butter or 1/3 cup margarine
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 cup instant oats

Steps:

  • Arrange a little less than half of the apple sauce in a 6"x10"x2" baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Spoon 3 tablespoons of the topping over the apple sauce base. Evenly arrange the Princella Yams. Add the remaining apple sauce to cover yams. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add the rest of the topping and spread evenly. Bake at 350 until heated throughout (30-40 minutes). Serve hot, plain, or for a special touch, top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Topping: Mix together rolled oats, flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter until evenly mixed and crumbly.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For the best applesauce, use a variety of apples that are firm and tart, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp.
  • Peel and core the apples: This will help to remove the skin and seeds, which can make the applesauce gritty.
  • Cook the apples until they are soft: This can be done on the stovetop or in a slow cooker.
  • Add sugar or other sweeteners to taste: If you like your applesauce sweet, you can add sugar, honey, or maple syrup. You can also add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for extra flavor.
  • Puree the applesauce until it is smooth: You can use a food processor, blender, or immersion blender to do this.
  • Serve the applesauce warm or cold: Applesauce can be enjoyed warm or cold. It is a great addition to breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Conclusion:

Applesauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Applesauce can be used as a spread, a dip, or a topping. It can also be added to baked goods or smoothies. With so many ways to enjoy it, applesauce is a must-have in any kitchen.
