Time 25m

Yield 4 super sloppy sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 21

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 1/4 pounds ground beef sirloin
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon steak seasoning blend, such as McCormick brand Montreal Seasoning
1 medium onion, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered
Garnish: sliced ripe tomatoes, pickles, Deviled Potato Salad, recipe follows
5 all-purpose potatoes, peeled and diced
Coarse salt
1/4 onion
3 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1/2 cup mayonnaise, eyeball the amount
1 teaspoon sweet paprika
1 teaspoon hot cayenne pepper sauce (recommended: Tabasco or Frank's Red Hot)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 scallions, thinly sliced, for garnish

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops. Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Deviled Potato Salad. Have plenty of napkins on hand!
  • Boil potatoes in water seasoned with coarse salt until they are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain cooked potatoes and return to the warm pot to dry them out. Let the potatoes stand 2 minutes, then spread potatoes out on to a cookie sheet to quick-cool them.
  • In the bottom of a medium mixing bowl, grate 1/4 onion using a hand grater. Add mustard and mayonnaise, paprika and cayenne pepper sauce to the grated onion and stir to combine. Add potatoes to the bowl and stir to evenly distribute dressing. Season potato salad with salt and pepper and taste to adjust your seasonings. Top servings of salad with chopped scallions.

RACHAEL RAY'S SUPER SCRUMPTIOUS SLOPPY JOES

Rachael Ray's Super Scrumptious Sloppy Joes image

This recipe is from Food Network's Rachael Ray. I like it b/c it uses tomato sauce instead of ketchup, and you can spice it up as you like. I add more onions as well as some garlic. * I like to use a little less brown sugar, as we like ours spicier rather than sweet.

Time 30m

Yield 15 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 lbs ground beef
2 teaspoons mccormick hot shot seasoning (or 1 tsp each cayenne or red pepper and black pepper)
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons chili powder (I prefer the hot mexican style for the extra kick)
4 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
30 ounces condensed tomato soup

Steps:

  • Brown the meat, breaking it up, until all fat has disappeard.
  • Lower heat to medium and add the Hot Shot, salt, chili powder and flour.
  • Mix well to distribute the flour throughout the meat.
  • Stir in the tomato soup, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar.
  • Continue to simmer and stir until thickened.
  • The longer you let it simmer, the better the flavors will bond.
  • It will thicken a bit more during cooling.
  • This feeds 5 good eaters.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality ground beef: Look for ground chuck or sirloin with a fat content of at least 15% for a juicy and flavorful sloppy joe.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is the star of the show in a sloppy joe, so make sure to use a sauce that you love. You can use a store-bought sauce or make your own from scratch.
  • Don't overcook the beef: Overcooked beef will be tough and dry. Cook the beef until it is just cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables add flavor, texture, and nutrients to sloppy joes. Try adding diced onions, peppers, or carrots to your sloppy joe mix.
  • Serve on a sturdy bun: Sloppy joes are a messy sandwich, so you need a bun that can hold up to all the sauce and meat. A hamburger bun or a hoagie roll are both good options.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a quick, easy, and delicious meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual party. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a sloppy joe that will be a hit with everyone at the table. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give sloppy joes a try. You won't be disappointed.
