Yield Makes 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 small ripe avocado, preferably Hass (see Note)
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, or to taste
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 bagels
2 slices or 4 thin strips of lox, or smoked salmon
2 thin slices of red onion
4 thin slices of tomato
1 teaspoon capers, rinsed (optional)

Steps:

  • A short time before serving, mash avocado and add lemon juice. Season with pepper and only a bit of salt, as there will be enough in the lox. Split bagels and spread each half with avocado. Top with lox. Put onion, tomato, and capers (if using) on bottom half, then set top half of sandwich in place. Serve at once.

Tips:

  • Choose the right bagel. Not all bagels are created equal. For a classic lox and bagel experience, choose a fresh, chewy bagel that is slightly toasted. New York-style bagels are a popular choice, but you can also use Montreal-style bagels or other types of bread.
  • Use high-quality lox. Lox is the star of the show, so it's important to use the best quality lox you can find. Look for lox that is fresh, firm, and has a bright orange color. Avoid lox that is slimy or has a strong fishy smell.
  • Don't overdo the cream cheese. Cream cheese is a great complement to lox, but it should not overwhelm the flavor of the fish. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on the bagel, just enough to add a bit of richness and creaminess.
  • Add your favorite toppings. There are many different toppings that you can add to your lox and bagel. Some popular choices include capers, red onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers. You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice or a dollop of horseradish sauce.
  • Enjoy your lox and bagel! Lox and bagel is a delicious and satisfying meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's also a great option for brunches and parties.

Conclusion:

Lox and bagel is a classic New York City dish that is enjoyed by people all over the world. It's a simple dish to make, but it's packed with flavor. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious and satisfying meal that will leave you feeling full and satisfied. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give lox and bagel a try.
