EASY BARBECUE SAUCE
I came up with this recipe via trial and error after running out of barbecue sauce one too many times. Now my family will not have any other kind. I make it in double batches and store it in a mason jar in the refrigerator. It can be canned for longer storage. You can add chopped garlic and less hot sauce, if desired.

SIMPLE BARBECUE SAUCE
Smoked paprika is the secret weapon in this simple barbecue sauce, which goes beautifully with pork and chicken. If you're painting the sauce onto cooking meat, thin it out with water to about a one-to-one ratio, which will keep the sugars from burning too quickly over the fire. Serve the full-strength stuff alongside the finished meat.

BASIC BARBECUE SAUCE
Editor's note: The recipe and introductory text below are from The Barbecue! Bible 10th Anniversary Edition, by Steven Raichlen. To read more about Raichlen and barbecue, go to our feature The Best Barbecue in the U.S.A. A good barbecue sauce is a study in contrasts: sweet versus sour, fruity versus smoky, spicy versus mellow. Here's a great all-purpose sauce that's loaded with flavor but not too sweet. It goes well with all manner of poultry, pork, or beef. The minced vegetables give you a coarse-textured sauce, which I happen to like. If you prefer a smooth sauce, puree it in a blender.

Steps:
- 1. Heat the oil in a large nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and bell pepper and cook until softened but not brown, about 4 minutes.
- 2. Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, pineapple juice (if using), hot sauce, liquid smoke, molasses, brown sugar, prepared and dry mustards, black pepper, and 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer, uncovered, until thickened, about 15 minutes, stirring often to prevent scorching. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a little more water.
- 3. Remove the barbecue sauce from the heat and taste for seasoning, adding salt to taste and more cider vinegar, hot sauce, and/or brown sugar as necessary; the sauce should be highly seasoned.
- 4. Transfer the barbecue sauce to a serving bowl and serve warm or at room temperature. The sauce will keep, tightly covered in the refrigerator, for several weeks.

Here's what you need: ketchup, worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard, light brown sugar, molasses, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper
Provided by Katie Aubin
Time 30m
Yield 1 cup
Number Of Ingredients 9
Steps:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire, apple cider vinegar, mustard, brown sugar, molasses, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne whisk to combine.
- Bring to a boil over medium heat, then simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
- Serve warm or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks
- Enjoy!
Tips:
- Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the sauce will taste. Use fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices, and choose a good quality vinegar and ketchup.
- Don't be afraid to experiment: There are many different ways to make barbecue sauce, so feel free to experiment with different ingredients and flavors. Add a little bit of brown sugar for sweetness, a dash of cayenne pepper for heat, or a squeeze of orange juice for a citrusy kick.
- Let the sauce simmer: Simmering the sauce allows the flavors to meld and develop. The longer you simmer the sauce, the better it will taste. However, be careful not to overcook the sauce, or it will lose its flavor.
- Taste the sauce as you go: The best way to make sure the sauce is perfect is to taste it as you go. Adjust the seasonings to your liking, and add more ingredients if necessary.
- Use the sauce on a variety of foods: Barbecue sauce is not just for grilled meats. It can also be used on chicken, fish, vegetables, and even tofu. It can also be used as a dipping sauce for appetizers or as a marinade for meats.
Conclusion:
Barbecue sauce is a versatile and delicious condiment that can be used on a variety of foods. It is easy to make at home, and you can customize it to your own taste. With a little experimentation, you can create the perfect barbecue sauce that will make your next cookout a success.
