PERFECT CABBAGE ROLL CASSEROLE

This was in a local school cookbook, it is super easy and as good as the "hard work" cabbage rolls.

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
salt and pepper

3 cups cabbage, shredded (I use a cheese grater)

Steps:

  • Brown meat and onion then stir the tomato soup and the rice, salt and pepper.
  • Layer half the cabbage in a greased 9x13 inch dish, cover with 1/2 the hamburger mixture, then layer the remainder of the cabbage and rest of the hamburger mixture. (Could use only 1 layer of hamburger between cabbage).

  • Sometimes I sprinkle the top with some grated cheddar cheese and pop back in the oven 5 min until melted.

Tips:

  • Choose the right type of cabbage: For this recipe, green cabbage or Savoy cabbage works best. Napa cabbage can also be used, but it may be more difficult to work with.
  • Blanch the cabbage leaves: Blanching the cabbage leaves helps to soften them and make them more pliable, making it easier to roll them. To blanch the leaves, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop the cabbage leaves in the boiling water for 1-2 minutes, or until they are bright green and tender. Remove the leaves from the boiling water and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Use a variety of fillings: The filling for cabbage rolls can be customized to your liking. Some popular fillings include ground beef, pork, or turkey, rice, vegetables, and spices. You can also add cheese, nuts, or fruits to the filling.
  • Roll the cabbage leaves tightly: When rolling the cabbage leaves, make sure to roll them tightly so that the filling does not fall out. You can use toothpicks or skewers to secure the rolls.
  • Cook the cabbage rolls thoroughly: Cabbage rolls can be cooked in a variety of ways, including baking, boiling, or steaming. Whichever method you choose, make sure to cook the cabbage rolls until they are heated through and the filling is cooked through.

Conclusion:

Cabbage rolls are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make cabbage rolls at home. So next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give cabbage rolls a try!
