This citrusy martini gets its striking layered appearance from drops of sangria-inspired simple syrup made from red wine and dark sweet cherries (after all, "sangria" means "bleeding" in Spanish!). An "impaled" cherry adds the finishing touch.

SANGRIA SIMPLE SYRUP:
1 cup sugar
1 cup red wine, such as Merlot or Zinfandel
1 cup dark sweet cherries, stemmed, pitted and halved
1 stick cinnamon
Strips of orange peel from 1 medium orange (orange part only)
SANGRIA COCKTAIL:
Ice cubes
1 1/2 ounces citron vodka
1 ounce clear orange-flavored liqueur
1 ounce sangria simple syrup, chilled
1 dark sweet cherry on a cocktail pick

Steps:

  • SIMPLE SYRUP: In 1 1/2-quart saucepan, mix sangria simple syrup ingredients. Heat to boiling over medium heat. Simmer 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; let cool 30 minutes. Strain mixture through fine mesh strainer; discard solids. Cover and chill sangria syrup until ready to use. Makes about 1 1/2 cups. COCKTAIL: Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka and orange liqueur to cocktail shaker; cover and shake. Strain into martini glass. Drizzle sangria syrup into cocktail in glass. Garnish with cherry. EXPERT TIPS: Use a vegetable peeler to remove strips of orange peel. Be sure to remove only the orange part of the peel; the white part, called pith, is bitter.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe and juicy oranges: The sweetness and flavor of the oranges will greatly impact the overall taste of your sangria. Opt for ripe, juicy oranges that are bursting with flavor.
  • Use a dry red wine: Dry red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot provide a bold and robust base for the sangria. Avoid sweet wines as they can make the sangria too overpowering.
  • Let the sangria chill: Chilling the sangria before serving allows the flavors to meld and develop. Aim for at least 2 hours of chilling time, or overnight for the best results.
  • Garnish with fresh fruit: Add a pop of color and flavor by garnishing your sangria with fresh fruit slices or wedges. Oranges, lemons, limes, and berries are popular choices.
  • Serve with ice: Sangria is best served chilled, so make sure to add plenty of ice to your glasses before pouring. You can also freeze some of the fruit and use it as ice cubes for an extra touch of flavor.

Conclusion:

Blood red sangria is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. With its vibrant color and delightful taste, it is sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering. Experiment with different fruits and spices to create your own unique variation of this classic Spanish drink.
