Time 4h35m

Yield approximately 4 pounds in shell and 2 pounds out of shell

Number Of Ingredients 3

2 pounds in-shell raw Virginia or Valencia peanuts
3 ounces kosher salt
3 gallons water

Steps:

  • Wash the peanuts in cool water until the water runs clear. Soak in cool water for 30 minutes to loosen any remaining dirt.
  • Drain and rinse the peanuts. Add the peanuts to a 12-quart pot along with the salt and 3 gallons of water. Stir well. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours. Check the texture of the peanut at this point for doneness. When done, boiled peanuts should have a similar texture to a cooked dry bean. It should hold its shape, but not crunch when bitten. Add more water throughout the cooking process, if needed. If necessary, continue cooking for 3 to 4 hours longer.
  • Drain the peanuts and store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • *Cook's note: The cooking time can vary greatly depending on how fresh the peanuts are. The fresher the peanut, the less time it will take to cook.

BOILED PEANUTS (BAWLD PNUTS)

Boiled Peanuts (Bawld Pnuts) image

Here's the best recipe for 'bawld' peanuts I have ever found y'all... got it from the Piggly Wiggly flyer LOL - seriously. They are the only ones I've found that actually taste like the roadside versions. A little bit of cayenne would make these Hawt Bawld Pnuts. Now when I say salt to taste... the original called for 1/4 to 1/2 box of salt - I just pour a whole lotta in there and they've always turned out.

Time 1h2m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

5 lbs green peanuts
salt (I use kosher cause it's the best!!)
1/4-1/2 tablespoon white vinegar

Steps:

  • Fill pot with enough water so all peanuts are floating with room to sink.
  • Add salt to taste (1/4 - 1/2 box).
  • Add one or two splashes of white vinegar.
  • Bring to boil, reduce heat to low; boil for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  • After boiling, let peanuts soak in brine for about 2 hours. Some prefer (but has never happened in our house) to let finished peanuts sit in ziploc bags in refrigerator overnight.

BOILED PEANUTS

Boiled Peanuts image

I grew up on Miami, my parents were from georgia...I can remember summers spent with cousins in the tobacca fields and I remember great big black iron pots at the family reunion with greens and another with boiled peanuts..they were good times! There was always a huge slab of smoked meat in the pot of peanuts...and my folks would always start a pot with smoked meat and hot peppers for those who like life "Spiced up" a bit. I still fix mine that way altho we don't have them often, Try it..especially if you are one who doesn't care for boiled peanuts..these will change your mind I hope! It is difficult for me to give the correct quantity of water and salt opposed to the peanuts as I never measure.

Time 3h

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 lbs green raw peanuts
water
1 cup salt
1 lb smoked ham hocks (may use ham bone) or 1 lb meat (may use ham bone)
hot pepper (optional)

Steps:

  • I had trouble putting in 2-3 lbs of green raw jumbo peanuts. I am new at posting -- please forgive.
  • Wash peanuts well to get rid of excess grit.
  • I always cover my peanuts with water add 1/2 the salt and bring to a boil for approx 15-20 minutes
  • Pour off that water and add more and the rest of the salt and smoked meat a cook until they are finished. You may need ro add more salt, this can be done as they cook and you begin to taste for doneness.
  • Usually a couple of hours on medium simmer.really to suit your own taste.I like mine fairly soft. Salt also is to your own taste. I split my batch in half most of the time and add hot peppers to taste as my kids love them hot.
  • Also, after they are finished cooking take them out of the water.if you don't they will continue to absorb the salt and will become way to salty.
  • Enjoy.and please let me know how you like them!

BOILED PEANUTS

Boiled Peanuts image

Provided by Matt Lee

Categories     Peanut     Boil

Yield Makes: 4 pounds, enough for 8 for snacking

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 1/2 cups salt, plus more to taste
2 pounds raw peanuts in the shell, or 3 pounds green peanuts

Steps:

  • 1 In a 10- to 12-quart stockpot, stir 1/2 cup salt into 2 gallons of water until the salt dissolves, and add the raw peanuts. Use a large dinner plate or two to help submerge the floating peanuts. Allow to soak for 8 hours or overnight. (This step saves a little time boiling, and thus fuel, but if you don't have the luxury of time, skip this step. Skip it also if you're using green peanuts.)
  • 2 Drain the soaking water and fill the pot of peanuts with 2 gallons of fresh water and the remaining cup of salt. Note the level of the water on the side of the pot. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and simmer, covered, for 6 to 8 hours (or 2 to 3 hours for green peanuts), keeping the water in the pot within an inch or so of its original level with regular additions of water, until the peanuts are soft as a roasted chestnut or softer.
  • 3 When the peanuts have boiled for 3 hours (or 1 hour for green peanuts), sample them to check their texture and salinity. Remove a peanut, and when it is cool enough to handle, crack open the shell and give the kernel a chew, slurping some brine with it. If the peanut crunches, it should be cooked further. If the brine lacks enough salt, add by 1/4-cup amounts; if it is too salty, remove a portion of the water and replace with the same volume of fresh water. Allow an hour for the salinity to equalize before testing again. Sample every hour until the peanuts are pleasantly yielding and as salty and appetizing as a good pickle.
  • 4 When the peanuts are cooked to your satisfaction, turn off the heat and allow them to cool in the pot for an hour (or 30 minutes for green peanuts). When cool enough to handle, drain and eat immediately or store in the shell, in a sealed container, in the refrigerator or freezer. (Boiled peanuts will keep for 7 to 10 days in the refrigerator and for several months in the freezer.)

Tips:

  • Choose fresh peanuts: Look for peanuts that are plump and have a bright red color. Avoid peanuts that are shriveled or have a dull color.
  • Soak the peanuts overnight: Soaking the peanuts overnight helps to soften them and makes them more flavorful. If you don't have time to soak the peanuts overnight, you can soak them for at least 4 hours.
  • Use a large pot: You will need a large pot to boil the peanuts in. Make sure the pot is big enough to hold all of the peanuts and water.
  • Add salt to the water: Salt helps to flavor the peanuts. You can add as much or as little salt as you like, depending on your taste.
  • Boil the peanuts for at least 2 hours: The peanuts need to be boiled for at least 2 hours in order to be fully cooked. You can boil them for longer if you like, but be careful not to overcook them.
  • Drain the peanuts and let them cool: Once the peanuts are cooked, drain them in a colander and let them cool. You can then serve the peanuts as is, or you can season them with your favorite spices.

Conclusion:

Boiled peanuts are a delicious and easy-to-make snack. They are perfect for parties, potlucks, or simply enjoying at home. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make your own boiled peanuts that are sure to be a hit.
