Yield 8 people

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
2 celery ribs, chopped
11 cups coarsely chopped cabbage (about 2 pounds)
2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) stewed tomatoes
1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chilies
1/2 cup ketchup
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
Shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream, optional

Steps:

  • Instructions In a large skillet, cook the beef over medium heat until meat is no longer pink. Stir in the onion and celery. Cook until crisp tender; drain. Transfer to a 5-qt. slow cooker. Stir in the cabbage, stewed tomatoes, beans, diced tomatoes, ketchup, chili powder, oregano, pepper and salt. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until cabbage is tender. Serve with cheese and sour cream if desired.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage. Green cabbage is the most common type used in cabbage patch stew, but you can also use savoy cabbage or red cabbage. Just be sure to remove the tough outer leaves before cooking.
  • Don't overcook the cabbage. Cabbage should be cooked until it is tender but still has a slight crunch. Overcooked cabbage will be mushy and lose its flavor.
  • Use a variety of vegetables. In addition to cabbage, you can add other vegetables to your stew, such as potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, and tomatoes. This will make your stew more flavorful and nutritious.
  • Season your stew to taste. Cabbage patch stew should be seasoned with salt, pepper, and other herbs and spices to taste. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for a bit of acidity.
  • Serve cabbage patch stew hot or cold. Cabbage patch stew can be served hot or cold. It is a great meal to make ahead of time and reheat for later.

Conclusion:

Cabbage patch stew is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is also a very versatile dish that can be easily customized to your liking. So next time you are looking for a comforting and delicious meal, give cabbage patch stew a try.
