AMERICA'S TEST KITCHEN CHEESY GARLIC BREAD

America's Test Kitchen Cheesy Garlic Bread image

Yummy, crusty, cheesy goodness from America's Test Kitchen. Garlicky, but not overpowering. Using a small cheese grater or zester to grate the garlic cloves will give a better texture. Better than store-bought!

Provided by Mark and Stacy

Categories     Breads

Time 45m

Yield 1 loaf, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 garlic cloves, grated
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (1 stick)
1/2 teaspoon water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 baguette, sliced in half horizontally (18- to 20-inch)
1 1/2 cups cheese (shredded Italian blend)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Move rack to the 2nd from bottom space.
  • Saute garlic, 1 tablespoon butter, and water over low heat, 7 to 10 minutes. It forms a paste.
  • Combine hot garlic, 7 tablespoons butter, salt, and pepper in a bowl and spread on both halves of the bread. Put the halves back together and wrap in foil. Place on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  • Unwrap bread and place halves, buttered sides up, on baking sheet. Bake until it begins to color, about 10 minutes. Take out of oven and turn on the broiler.
  • Sprinkle bread with cheese. Place under the broiler until cheese has melted and bread is crispy, about 1 or 2 minutes. Put on cutting board, cheesy side down. Cut into pieces. Serve.

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread. A good garlic bread starts with a good loaf of bread. Look for a bread that is sturdy enough to hold up to the garlic butter and cheese, but not so dense that it's hard to bite into. A French baguette, Italian bread, or sourdough bread are all good choices.
  • Use real butter. Don't skimp on the butter when making garlic bread. Real butter will give your bread a richer flavor than margarine or other butter substitutes.
  • Use fresh garlic. Fresh garlic has a much more intense flavor than garlic powder or garlic salt. If you can, use fresh garlic cloves whenever possible.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment. There are many different ways to make garlic bread. Feel free to experiment with different herbs, cheeses, and toppings to find your favorite combination.

Conclusion:

Garlic bread is a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of meals. It's perfect for parties, potlucks, or just a casual weeknight dinner. With so many different ways to make it, there's sure to be a garlic bread recipe that everyone will love.
