Time 25m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 6

¾ cup water
salt to taste
2 cups peeled pearl onions
¼ cup butter
1 ½ cups cold whole milk
¼ cup quick-mixing flour (such as Wondra®), or more as needed

  • Mix milk and quick-mixing flour together in a bowl; add to onion mixture. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until thickened, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in more quick-mixing flour if mixture is too thin.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Yellow or white onions are the best choice for this recipe. They have a mild flavor that will not overpower the cheese.
  • Slice the onions thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly.
  • Use a good quality cheese: Cheddar, Parmesan, and Gruyère are all good choices. Use a blend of cheeses for a more complex flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Make sure there is enough space between the onion slices so that they can cook evenly.
  • Cook the onions over medium heat: This will help them caramelize and develop a rich flavor.
  • Don't stir the onions too much: Stirring them too much will prevent them from caramelizing properly.
  • Serve the onions immediately: They are best enjoyed hot and crispy.

Conclusion:

Cheesy onions are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of meals. They are also a great way to use up leftover onions. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a dish that is sure to please everyone at the table. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy side dish, give cheesy onions a try. You won't be disappointed!
