This sauce is a little on the tart side. If you prefer it sweeter, add more sugar to taste. Serve it as a condiment with roasted turkey or pork.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 medium onion, cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup dry red wine
1 12-ounce bag fresh cranberries
1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch dice
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
1/4 teaspoon curry powder
Juice and grated zest of 1 orange
1/3 cup dried currants

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine onion, sugar, and wine. Place over medium-high heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer, covered, 4 minutes.
  • Add all remaining ingredients except currants; cook until cranberries have popped, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in currants. Serve at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use a variety of apples with different flavors and textures, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. This will give your sauce a more complex flavor.
  • Don't peel the apples: The peel adds color, flavor, and nutrients to the sauce. Just be sure to wash the apples thoroughly before using them.
  • Use fresh cranberries: Fresh cranberries have a brighter flavor than frozen or canned cranberries. If you can't find fresh cranberries, you can use frozen or canned cranberries, but be sure to thaw them before using.
  • Add spices to taste: Use spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to add flavor to the sauce. You can also add a splash of orange juice or lemon juice for a bit of brightness.
  • Cook the sauce until it reaches the desired consistency: You can cook the sauce for a short time for a chunky sauce or for a longer time for a smooth sauce.

Conclusion:

Chunky apple cranberry sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be served with a variety of dishes. It's perfect for Thanksgiving dinner, but it can also be enjoyed year-round. With its sweet and tart flavor, chunky apple cranberry sauce is a surefire hit with everyone who tries it.
