When you're feeling under the weather, a hot toddy can be a soothing and comforting drink to help relieve your symptoms. There are many different variations of this classic recipe, but they all typically include some combination of hot water, honey, lemon juice, and whisky or brandy. Some recipes also call for adding spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves, or a bit of ginger for an extra kick. While there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that hot toddies can cure the common cold, they can provide temporary relief from symptoms like sore throat, cough, and congestion.

Okay, so our family doctor suggested this instead of prescription cough syrup for relieving the cold symptoms of the ADULTS in our family (he of course, did NOT suggest it as a CURE). He says the whisky helps you sleep while the honey and lemon soothe your throat. I'm pretty sure it works, but in the end we really don't care because we love this warm drink when we aren't feeling well. Even sometimes when we are feeling well! UPDATE: Our beloved Dr. Pat passed away November 19,2010 at the age of 59 from Melanoma so now this recipe with all of it's great reviews is even more special to our family. We will miss you forever Pat!!!

Tips:

  • Use fresh or dried ginger: Fresh ginger is more pungent, while dried ginger is milder. Both are effective in treating colds and flu.
  • Add a sweetener: Honey is a natural cough suppressant and also helps to soothe sore throats. Other sweeteners, such as sugar or agave nectar, can also be used.
  • Use boiling water: The hot water helps to extract the medicinal properties from the ginger and lemon.
  • Add a splash of bourbon or whiskey: The alcohol helps to open up the airways and can also help you to relax.
  • Drink it hot: The heat of the toddy will help to soothe your sore throat and clear your nasal passages.

Conclusion:

A hot toddy is a traditional cold and flu remedy that can help to relieve symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and nasal congestion. It is made with hot water, ginger, lemon, honey, and a splash of bourbon or whiskey. The hot water helps to extract the medicinal properties from the ginger and lemon, while the honey helps to soothe sore throats. The alcohol in the bourbon or whiskey helps to open up the airways and can also help you to relax. Drinking a hot toddy before bed can help you to get a good night's sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.
